What Can I do?

We have setup collection centers in many locations around the city (See the list). Just drive in to any of them with your donation (Read the list).

These donations will be routed to the affected areas through the Emergency 104 and 108 vehicles (A few hundred of these medical vans, run by HMRI are already in the affected areas) and directly by the participating NGOs.

What Can I donate?

It becomes difficult to co-ordinate if there are a large number of different things that have to be distributed. We have decided to concentrate only on a few of them instead. These are:

Cash
We, the coordination committee have neither a bank account nor accountants. We prefer you to buy any of the below items and hand them over to one of our collection centers. If you really insist on giving money, you may give it to the NGO running a particular collection center, they will purchase the required relief material. The coordination committee will only accept relief material from these NGOs in turn.
Tarpaulin, Plastic Sheets
We urgently need to supply tarpaulin and thick plastic sheets to act as shelters, plastic chattais to spread on the ground. The houses are gutted with water, most of the victims are spending their days out in the open. There is a severe shortage of shelter and dry ground.
Candles and Solar Torches
We don't expect even the bigger towns like Kurnool and Mahboobnagar to have electricity restored in the next few days. These places require lighting in the nights. Though candles are a temporary measure, we prefer donations of solar torches that will not require expensive cells to keep them recharged. Check with our website soon for places where you can buy these.
Clothes
Don't send used and worn clothes. The flood victims are folks just like us, and they need fresh, clean and simple clothes. Buy some decent cotton readymades from any of the shops. It is more important to cloth the women and children. So appropriately send in women's clothing, children's shorts, shirts, lungis and adult shirts of large size.
Blankets
Cotton blankets are preferred over woolen blankets. These are required for children to sleep and keep away the mosquitoes.
Kitchen sets
A kerosene stove, two cooking bowls (one big and one small), a cooking spoon, a serving spoon, three to four plates, three to four glasses and a knife. Don't fill the stove with kerosene (it is inflammable) and try for sturdy plastic or steel utensils, avoid glass (it can break in the transport).
Milk Powder, Biscuits, Water bottles
Milk powder and biscuits are easily stored nutritious form of food. Water bottles are reportedly being sold at exorbitant prices. Send in large water bottles.
Mosquito Coils
The stagnating waters are a breeding ground for mosquitoes that can lead to malaria and dengue epidemics. Mosquito coils will go a long way in stopping this.
Combs, Hair Oil, Soap, Matches
Matches will be required to burn candles, cook food. Soap is important in preventing spread of contagious diseases. Combs and Hair oil are quite useful for the affected folks.

When dropping this at one of our collection centers, do collect a receipt.
